Keep your hair color from fading

There are a number of ways to keep your hair color from fading. Professional hairstylist use the best in hair color. They also use products before the service to prepare the hair for the color, like a clarifying shampoo. This will remove anything in the hair that doesn't belong and prepare for the color service. This allows the color to penetrate deeper which will allow the color to last longer.Reds wash away quicker because the dye molecule is larger and has a harder time entering the cuticle. This in turn causes the color to escape quicker. Then immediately following hair color service, products can be used to stop the oxidation and any residual color that may have been left in hair. They may recommend that you wait a couple days to wash your hair. This allows the dye molecules to get settled in the hair. They should recommend hair care products that are color safe and with preserve your color. A hair masque or deep condition is recommended weekly. The hydration strengthens the strands making them less prone to environmental damage that causes color to fade. Hot water expands the cuticle allowing the color to escape so it is important to  rinse your hair is cooler water.

Even though you may do all that is recommended, keep in mind the water you use may contain chlorine which is washing your color down the drain. Think about installing a purifying shower head. You can get this at dermstore.com
You also need to remember that the sun, tanning beds. ultraviolet lights break down the melanin or pigment by as much a 4 whole shades. Wear a scarf when you are outside. The salts in the beach water, the chlorine in the pools can also be hard on your hair color. Take the time to dampen your hair before entering pool or ocean water.
If you have any question, ask your hairstylist for the recommended products

Beauty Busy

Wow, this past week has been busy! As noted in my last blog, I did indeed make chili and a potato corn cheese soup. I was able to share these with the people I love the most...Family and Friends!!! I spent some time with my favorite grandson ( and only). Then off for some R & R..(That's Rest and Rev up for more). This week I traveled to Harlan to help share my knowledge, love and passion of Surface Hair with a great group of Stylists. I then shared my lunch(homemade soup) with my aunt Martha.. She is my favorite aunt (and only). I took some time out last evening for a mentor training meeting in which I will be matched up to a mentee that is thinking of entering the hair biz.  New products are being launched with Surface, so there is excitement in the air! This week my goal is to read a book, watch a movie and even paint my nails! The little pleasures of life when life gets so busy

Details

Well yesterday I talked about the apple bread and cake I made. I even posted pictures and told you I was taking it to Westlakes Studios.  Well, not only did everything I brought get eaten,  but it was all gone in a matter of minutes, I think.  I also took some leftover apples and some jalapenos. One of the gals said she would take them and make something with them. That's a good thing, because she is an awesome chef ! Plus the fact I won't have any time this week to do anymore with them. Tomorrow, I am going to make a big pot of chili and a potato type soup. I will also be enjoying the day with my grandson, James
Here is a sneak peak of some of the ingredients in my soup.

Fall into Homemade Treats

I was given some apples from a friend of mine. I have had them for a couple weeks and decided today is a Fall like day. With that in mind, I chose to do some baking. Fresh apples in an Apple Bread and an Apple Cake. I love to try new recipes and then put my signature on them. Maybe it's a little more cinnamon, or applesauce. Or it could be a little less of something. I love to share my homemade goods. Today, I will share with the hairstylist at Westlakes Studios in West Des Moines. I know they will enjoy it. It's the little things that don't mean a lot, they mean everything. And anytime I can do something for someone, great or small it makes me feel better. I know it makes them feel great to know someone cares enough to do something nice. Anyway, here is some pictures of my creations

Store brand Color

Are you cutting back on salon hair color and going to the store to purchase it? Do you know that most store colors have to be adjusted at the salon? Meaning, that it doesn't always turn out like the picture on the box. This in turn can cost you more money than if you had gone to the salon in the first place. Home hair jobs are simply not good! Do you want color that looks a little strange? Have you factored in the cost of stained flooring, towels and even you clothes. Next time you think about doing your own hair color, add up the cost of the color, the time you spent doing the color, the cost of replacing the ruined clothing pieces including the towels. Did you really save that much money?

Trends in hair are varying by color and length.

With it’s textured look and angled tips, this pixie is a modern take on the classic

The in-between length can often lack impact but adding soft layers solves that problem.

Rachel Zoe’s fall line, shown below, and many other designers are all about the wide pants this season. They look great with a simple tank and a long necklace or with a boyfriend jacket, as shown herestyleblueprint nyctrends4 2013 08 08 620x775 Eight Fall Fashion Trends

Hair and Skin Ingredients

Are you aware that most of the shampoos and personal care products used today have cancer causing agents? The following identifies many of the ingredients commonly found in shampoos and skin care products and their possible side effects. Well today, I will summarize a few key ingredients that you will want to avoid when purchasing your next beauty care products. And I will tell you the risks you take when using products with these ingredients. I will warn you, this information may scare you. But the next time you purchase your beauty products, you will be better informed to make the right decision.

  • Sulfate:  is salt and sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is a  very strong acid, Sodium laureth sulfate, or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), a detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products (soaps, shampoos, toothpaste etc.)  This can also be found in car washes, garage floor cleaners and  engine degreasers. Sulfates are found in Shampoo to give you that lather and suds. but it can also cause scalp irration,  redness and itching.
  • Petroleum derived ingredients  cleans and dissolves oils, but it's also found in antifreeze, wood finish, and shellac. Alcohol is also extremely drying and strips hair of moisture, which can lead to hair damage and loss. Another name for it is: propylene glycol. This can also be found in your deodorant. This can have a systemic affect on your brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.
  • DEA and MEA are hormone disrupting chemicals that are known to form cancer causing nitrates . They are found in personal care products like bubble baths, body washes, facial products  and hair shampoos. Studies prove that using a product with this ingredient over time can cause liver and kidney cancers. The risk equation changes significantly in children.
  • IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA and DMDM HYDANTOIN: Another name: formaldehyde. Formaldehyde can irritate the respiratory system, cause skin reactions and trigger heart palpitations. Exposure to formaldehyde may cause joint pain, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness and loss of sleep. It can also aggravate coughs and colds and trigger asthma. Serious side effects include weakening of the immune system and cancer. Nearly all brands of skin, body and hair care, antiperspirants and nail polish found in stores contain formaldehyde releasing ingredients.
  • MINERAL OIL: Baby oil is 100% mineral oil. This commonly used petroleum ingredient coats the skin just like plastic wrap. The skin's natural immune barrier is disrupted as this plastic coating inhibits its ability to breathe and absorb the natural Moisture Factor (moisture and nutrition). The skin's ability to release toxins is impeded by this "plastic wrap", which can promote acne and other disorders. This process slows down skin function and normal cell development causing the skin to prematurely age.
  • ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL: This is a solvent and denaturant (poisonous substance that changes another substance's natural qualities). Isopropyl alcohol is found in hair color rinses, body rubs, hand lotions, after shave lotions, fragrances and many other cosmetics. This petroleum derived substance is also used in antifreeze and as a solvent in shellac. According to a Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients, inhalation or ingestion of the vapor may cause headaches, flushing, dizziness, mental depression, nausea, vomiting, narcosis and coma.

Reflection

Today I reflect on days gone past, years and months.  Yesterday I was struggling with the fact that my son was leaving to move to Portland. I was being selfish, self-centered and depressed. By the end of the day into the night I came to the conclusion that I am in fact very lucky. I am lucky he isn't in any armed forces that would force him to fight for his country and maybe his life. I am lucky he isn't in jail, drug or alcohol rehab or any other institution. I am lucky because he chose to move and isn't forced. He planned this months ago and has saved the money, went prepared as much as possible. I am lucky he is willing to look outside the box and Iowa. He has the adventure a lot of people don't. He has the youth, strength and courage to travel across the country, pulling a u haul trailer packed up with all of his belongings. He is willing to make a fresh start in a new part of the country. Our country. The USA. He could have chosen another country, thousands and thousands of miles away. But he is only 24 hours away. He has his whole life ahead of him and he is doing what he wants to do with it. He is not being dictated by his parents, employer or wife. He is a young, single man who can do what he wants. It is not a mistake for him to do this. It's an adventure. And even if, that's a big IF, he doesn't like it. He can always come back home, or to Iowa or anywhere else he desires.
So I reflect on him growing up, we gave him the roots to give him strength and the wings to help him fly. I am so very blessed in life.
